Drinking Alcohol will make you Fat

We are three types of people. Some like me, who’d prefer to have wine and call it a dinner (of course! Never ends at one glass). Others, also like me, chugging away the week day’s hardships at weekend nights. Yet another, may be like me, dropping in on drinks, now and then, sometimes or every time.

Irrespective of these categories, you will find it interesting to know what alcohol can do to your fat and what can you do to it back.

Does drinking alcohol make you fat?

If you were to see what is happening in your body after you chug the alcohol, then it would look something like this.

Just as it enters your system, alcohol travels to it’s digestion destination where it is broken into two compounds: Acetate and Fats. Fats acts as a good buddy and is taken directly to

Alcohol isn’t just about chugging or bottoms up, anymore.

wherever your body stores fats (belly, arms, thighs, to say) through your bloodstream.

Whereas Acetate, the difficult buddy, replaces other energy producing agents and becomes your body's primary energy fuel.

But how does this make you fat, you ask? Well, your body now stops using carbohydrates, fats or proteins to burn into energy and as they are reductant, your body will convert them into storable units - fat. This surplus non-energy will have nowhere to go but stay in your body.

Simply put, consuming alcohol will put your body at surplus energy. Hence, as body is programmed, it will convert non-used energy into fat stored in your body, until you decide to sweat it out. This is how drinking alcohol makes you fat.

Enough for alcohol lovers! It time now to know:

What can we do about this?

  • Dilute is better than neat. Diluting will reduce overall calorie intake

  • In order of less to more calories, you can dilute with either water or soda or fruit juice

  • 1:2 mantra. For every Alcoholic drink savour 2 drinks of water

  • Trick your mind with adding more ice. It will make your drink seem bigger without actually taking on calories

  • Slowly. The fact that will reduce your over consumption

  • Eat before you drink

  • Try saying no to salty foods. Be successful in your try

  • Never before sleep. At least 2 hours prior

  • Don’t drink, too much!

It may be difficult to think when it comes to alcohol. But for your fats you must.

If you are young, you should know this — According to American Health Journal of Preventive Medicine, people who drink heavily when they are younger have a higher risk of gaining excess weight and becoming overweight or obese when they’re older.

If you are old already? Well, your ship has sailed. But don’t worry, start using the energy you have been saving up.

Oh! If did I miss mentioning the fourth type of people, those not like me, ones who never drink - You, my friend, have other foods to worry about.

For others, you don’t have to swear off alcohol to not gain weight. All you have to do is be gentle on intake.
